Stability and Freedom
"We all want to feel safe, grounded, held together, nurtured, and we also want to be free. We want to break out and know what more there is."
- Dr. Douglas Brooks
Creativity is the ultimate freedom. But creating something where nothing was before requires a stable base to launch from - a well-developed skill set, a consistent voice, a reliable schedule, a proven market context, a community of supporters.
Over the years, I have worked on the balance of stability and freedom through my yoga practice. We develop our muscular strength to gain stability, and we stretch to increase that flexibility that gives us freedom. It is a powerful concept that extends to all areas of one's personal and professional life. Off the mat, we make commitments, seek security, and hold close what we hold dear. And it is from that safe base that we can bravely explore the world around us and create the as-yet-unimagined.
Things for innovators to think about while in downward facing dog.
